This is a powerful observation. If a teenager needs a smartphone to escape parental supervision, then a smartphone becomes an essential and irresistible part of growing up. On a more positive note, I think smartphones encourage parents to loosen the reins and allow their children to be more independent, because they know they can contact them so easily. Some future sociologist may well conclude that both are true: the smartphone giveth and the smartphone taketh away.
