The first time I heard about this issue I was disturbed. But after more reading and reflection, I ended up… slightly relieved. Many of the unrepeatable findings were from studies that I remembered reading about — and ones that I remembered feeling skeptical about due to their small amount of data/weak correlation/unaddressed alternate explanations. (The “misattribution of arousal” (bridge experiment) was one that always bothered me.) Many of these ideas ended up in psychology textbooks, underscoring the fact that our threshold for accepting exciting-sounding ideas is just too low.
