The Debbie Sterling video is particularly relevant for this. She talks about how she almost gave up studying engineering because she felt so incompetent compared to her self-assured male peers. It was only after she committed herself passing at any cost, 3 am nights studying in the library, etc., that she saw the most of the male students were in exactly the same boat as she was — there, struggling and studying until 3 am in the same library.
As you go farther in education, STEM subjects aren’t easy. But too often, the message to struggling men is “this subject is hard” while the message to struggling girls is “this subject probably isn’t for you.”
