Sometimes they do give kids problems with shapes instead of letters (like a triangle and a circle). At first, it seemed unnecessary to me (I’ll admit), but I’ve since heard from many people about how letters are actually a stumbling block for many people learning math. Basically a lot of things about how we encode math symbolically with math become barriers for people who have difficulties making that jump.
