Oh, I support airport security and many of the COVID restrictions we had in the past two years. But sometimes doing things right is hard — whether it’s stopping a dedicated person from causing havoc on a plane, or preventing yourself from spreading a dangerous illness. And sometimes the approach that actually works is painful and inconvenient, and it’s easier to just say “let’s do this other useful-seeming thing instead.” So if wearing masks and limiting social contacts is hard, we don’t do that, but we try to make everyone feel better by showing them the sheer volume of disinfectant fluid we use, even though we’re tackling an illness that’s almost always spread by air. At some point, it’s better to make that adult decision to accept risk or not, rather than pretend we can have it all.
