I've been investigating this too. Definitely a custom domain will not have the medium.com domain authority, which *should* reduce your visibility in terms of Google content suggestions and search results. But I'm not sure if having your article curated on a Medium page affects how Google treats it, possibly giving it some sort of compensating benefit. I'm no SEO expert, but for now I'm avoiding the custom domain feature.
