Interesting. Asking as a layperson with some musical background but no special knowledge of cello — is this alternate tuning done to bring out certain resonances or effects on open strings? Or is it just to make passages easier to play? Also, is it safe to assume all our favorite recorded versions of the Bach cello suites use scordatura tuning, because that’s the only right way to do it?
