I completely agree that tech companies can buy outsized influence with donations they source from their customers. But I wouldn’t but The Gates Foundation in the same category, because it’s a private philanthropic organization not affiliated with Microsoft. It’s fortunate is from the personal wealth of Bill Gates, along with donations from Warren Buffet, and other investment. It’s more like traditional Andrew-Carnegie robber-baron style philanthropy, where in the other examples I think there’s a very legitimate concern that companies are using philanthropy to grow the influence of their companies.
