I can only assume the parent was trying to discount writing as a possible career choice. My wife teaches music & piano and faces this occasionally from parents who are eager to redirect their children away from getting “too serious.” The same advice that you apply to writing applies there, as well — music is all around us, and there is a wealth of activities & endeavors that can benefit from musical knowledge, even if you aren’t a dedicated music performer.
