I agree with you completely. When I was teaching my daughters about programming, I considered Python, but I didn't want to force them to learn a whole proprietary UI framework at the same time, even if it was something fun like Pygame. I eventually went with JavaScript because that meant learning HTML, which is a worthwhile skill on its own, even though the JavaScript language is far from perfect for a beginner.

I wish there was a really simple forms-based drag-and-drop design tool beginners could start with, even if it was just an add-on for education.
